Marin Cilic v Ricardas Berankis Head to Head

They met once, six years ago, with Cilic winning the second round match at Wimbledon in five sets.

Cilic Storms Into the Final Four

World No. 41 Marin Cilic fired in 15 aces as he hustled past Spain’s Pedro Martinez in the quarterfinals of the Kremlin Cup on Friday.

The 19-time tour-level champion, who ended a three-year title drought in Stuttgart earlier this year, reached the fourth semifinal of the season with a 6-1, 6-2 win over the World No. 61.

Not broken once in the match, Cilic dropped just 11 points on his serve and converted four of five break points.

The 33-year-old Croatian, who won back-to-back titles in Moscow in 2014 and 2015, was a semifinalist in the last edition in 2019, going down to eventual champion Andrey Rublev.

He began this year’s challenge with a 6-7 (4-7), 6-1, 6-1 win over 2017 champion Damir Dzhumur and then knocked out America’s Tommy Paul 7-5, 6-3 in the Round of 16.

Cilic is playing in a first tournament since retiring with an injury from his first round match at the U.S. Open—his first-ever retirement in more than 800 career matches.

He is 25-17 for the season. In addition to winning the title in Stuttgart, he made it to the semifinals in Singapore and Estoril.

Berankis Beats Mannarino A Second Time in Moscow

Ricardas Berankis made it to the main draw as a lucky loser, but hasn’t put a foot wrong in the last three matches, reaching the semifinals without dropping a set.

The 2017 Moscow runner-up, who had reached the final by beating Adrian Mannarino in the semifinal four years ago, once again ended the Frenchman’s run in the tournament, defeating him in the quarterfinals on Friday.

The Lithuanian converted three of 10 break points and saved seven of eight to beat Mannarino 6-2, 7-6 (7-1) in an hour and 57 minutes.

Ranked 108th in the world, Berankis had defeated Russia’s Evgeny Donskoy 6-1, 6-3 in the opening round and then crushed Argentina’s Federico Coria 6-2, 6-1 in the Round of 16.

This is the first time this year that Berankis has won three main draw matches in a row.

The 31-year-old had come into the tournament as a lucky loser. He had won the first qualifying round against Kazakhstan’s Dmitry Popko but lost to Croatia’s Borna Gojo in the second round of qualification.

Cilic v Berankis Prediction and Tip

Although Berankis has been playing well in the tournament, he will find the going tough against Cilic. Expect the experienced Cilic to prevail in the semifinal.
