Maria Sakkari v Ekaterina Alexandrova Head to Head
Sakkari holds an almost-insurmountable 3-0 lead over Alexandrova, picking them up well before hitting her stride in 2021. Her most recent victory over the Russian came in the 2019 San Jose Open.

Sakkari Storms Past Halep
Maria Sakkari may not have won a singles title in 2021, but she has played the kind of tennis that would beg to tell a story comprising a multitude of trophies. Currently ranked World No. 7 – her best ranking yet – the Greek looks to finally take home a title to cap what has unarguably been the best year of her career yet.
Starting with a bye into round two in the WTA Kremlin Cup, Sakkari has so far defeated Anna Kalinskaya (6-2, 1-0 retired), and Simona Halep (6-4, 6-4). While the 26-year-old won just 56 percent of her points behind the serve, she was certainly aided by Halep’s weaker play.
That said, even if Halep were at her clinical best, Sakkari would have probably ousted her. The Greek arrived in Russia on the back of some impeccable consistency that propelled her into the top 10. The highlight was undoubtedly her semifinal run in the US Open, which she followed with a runner-up feat in Ostrava.
In addition to this, Sakkari was one of the final four in Miami, Abu Dhabi, Grampians Trophy, and the French Open as well.

Alexandrova Finds her Groove
It has been a long wait for Ekaterina Alexandrova to feature in a WTA Tour semifinal event. The last time she featured in the semis was in the Gippsland Trophy in January, where she lost to Kaia Kanepi in the final- but only after taking out Iga Swiatek and Simona Halep.
Since then, the 26-year-old has struggled a great deal to deliver similar results on the circuit. A handful of quarterfinal appearances is all she has managed and the rest of the season is marked with early-round exits.
Case in point, Alexandrova was beaten in the second round in New York, Luxembourg, and Ostrava although, in the last, that defeat came in the qualifiers.
But here in Kremlin, the current World No. 37 has been a class apart. In the first round, she edged past the in-form Tunisian Ons Jabeur 6-1, 1-0 before the latter retired from the match. Next up, she took out the Ukrainian Anhelina Kalinina 6-4, 6-1 to set up the quarterfinal clash with Aryna Sabalenka.
Against all odds, the former Russian number one delivered the upset by defeating Sabalenka 6-3, 6-4 to reach her third career semifinal in the WTA 500 circuit.
Sakkari v Alexandrova Prediction and Tip
Sakkari should do well to win this one but here’s an interesting fact: Alexandrova has excelled in indoor tournaments, having won the WTA Limoges Challenger thrice and reaching the final in the Linz Open in 2018.
Alexandrova is in her element and can give Sakkari a solid run for her money. Expect a good game of tennis.
