Marin Cilic v Albert Ramos-Vinolas Head to Head

The pair have played each other eight times before, and Cilic leads their head-to-head series by five matches to three.

Their two matches on clay were shared between them, but Cilic has had the edge when it comes to hard courts, including their most recent match at the Canadian Masters this year, which he won in three sets.

Moscow Finalist Cilic

Cilic has enjoyed something of a return to form in 2021, after several years of struggling with his form.

The 2014 US Open winner won his first tire for three years on the grass of Stuttgart in June, and, the following month, he went to the Olympics and returned with a silver medal in the men’s doubles, after losing an all Croat final with partner Ivan Dodig.

And he likes playing in Russia as well. He won the Kremlin Cup in 2014 and 2015, and has reached the final again this year, with a match to come against local favourite Aslan Karatsev.

The points he collects from there and also this week in St. Petersburg could help him end the year back in the top 40 in the world again.

Ramos-Vinolas Struggling Away from Clay

Ramos-Vinolas began the year well. Finishing runner-up at the Cordoba Open and then winning in Estoril, where he beat Cameron Norrie in the final.

A third round at the Miami Masters was to follow, but, as the tour moved away from his preferred surface of clay, so his results began to suffer.

In particular, a run of early defeats marred the first part of his summer, briefly interrupted by a run to the third round in Umag.

Since then, though the same pattern has emerged, although he did buck that trend somewhat at Indian Wells, where he achieved straight sets victories over Lorenzo Musetti and Felix Augur-Aliassime before losing to the eventual finalist Nikoloz Basilashvili.

Normal service though was resumed last week in Antwerp with another early defeat, a although he did, at least, take a set off the German, Jan-Lennard Struff.
