Emma Raducanu v Anna Bogdan Head to Head

This will be the first meeting between the two players on the WTA Tour.

Raducanu Wins her First WTA Match

It is not every day you hear of a player who wins her first tour-level match after winning a major. Yet, this is precisely what Great Britain’s Emma Raducanu has achieved.

In the Transylvania Open, she battled past Polona Hercog 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 in two and a half hours to win her first WTA match.

The 18-year-old made her debut on the circuit only in June this season – having played her last professional event in March 2020. She arrived in Cluj-Napoca on the back of a title run in the US Open (she won 10 matches as a qualifier without dropping a set) and a first-round exit in the BNP Paribas Open.

Up until now, Raducanu had failed to move past this stage of a WTA event in her last three attempts. However, she did reach the fourth round in Wimbledon and later was a finalist in the WTA Chicago Challenger. Needless to say, her rise on the tour has been meteoric.

Raducanu was ranked #366 in June when she made her debut in Nottingham – now she is the World No. 23 and looks primed to go further. That said, she still has ways to go as she deals with fame, expectations, and building upon her overall play and experience.

For what it’s worth, she can do well in the competition. Here in Romania – her father’s home country – she is being treated as a favourite and seems to be relishing these new challenges.

Bogdan Starts Strong

Ana Bogdan, currently ranked World No. 106 and some 10 years elder to Raducanu, started her campaign with a straight-set win over Ivana Jorović. The Romanian took the match 7-6(1), 6-4 in an hour and 42 minutes to reach round two.

Playing in her first competition since the Flushing Meadows major (where she fell to Rebeka Masarova in the opener), Bogdan hasn’t had that great of a season in 2021. She has not featured in that many competitions and the handful few she did play, she was beaten in the early rounds.

Her best run came in the French Open and WTA Istanbul where the 20-time ITF finalist reached round three. Clearly, Bogdan is not the kind of player you would peg for a deep run but seeing that she is playing on her home turf against an inexperienced opponent, she will fancy her chances to reach the quarterfinal.

Raducanu v Bogdan Prediction and Tip

Raducanu is the odds-on favourite, given her recent form and momentum. However, she is still heavily unacquainted with the tour life and that is something that Bogdan can build upon. At the same time, Bogdan’s mediocre season gives the Brit the perfect opportunity to rack a good victory.

Expect a good game of tennis that can go either way.
