Vekic Prospering Against Chinese Opposition

It has been a largely disappointing season for the Croat Vekic, but she still harbours hopes of redeeming something form it after reaching the semi-finals of a tournament where she has exclusively faced Chinese opposition to date.

She began by defeating the world number 151 Qinwen Zheng, although the world number 151 did take her to a tie-break in the first set.

Next up was her namesake Saisai Zheng, and she was also beaten in straight sets.

The third member of that triumvirate, Wang Xinyu, was her quarter-final opponent on Friday.

Vekic began well, breaking Wang in the opening game of the match, and she was able to consolidate that to claim the first set.

The pair began the second set by exchanging breaks, but then the Chinese woman dropped her serve again, and the match was as good as over.

Samsonova’s Serene Progress to the Semi-Finals

Samsonova has reached the semi-finals in Italy, without seriously having to exert herself so far.

She did get the benefit of a kind draw, meeting two qualifiers, Stephanie Wagner of Germany, and Aliona Bolsova-Zadionov in the earlier rounds but dealt with anything they had to offer with ease.

Compatriot Anna Kalinskaya, the world number 114, in theory offered a stiffer challenge in Friday’s quarter-final, but it proved to be a one-sided contest in the end.

The match began with three consecutive breaks of serve, leading Samsonova a break up. However, two more breaks enabled her to claim the first set in just 25 minutes.

A further break midway through the second set put Samsonova in complete control and her dominance was underlined when serving to stay in the match, Kalinskaya dropped her serve for a final time.

Vekic v Samsonova Prediction and Tip
