Stefanos Tsitsipas v Alexei Popyrin Head to Head

Tsitsipas’ Strong Season Waning

Stefanos Tsitsipas has reached a career high world number three in the ATP rankings and tasted consistent success ranging from a good run Down Under, the finals at the Mexican Open and a wonderful run on clay with titles at Monte Carlo, Lyon and a point away from the Barcelona title against Rafa Nadal.

The icing on the cake would have been a grand slam title to his name and it looked like he was there as he led Novak Djokovic by two sets to love in the French Open final only to be outdone in the next three sets.

The form and confidence took a dip thereafter with a straight sets loss to Frances Tiafoe in the Wimbledon opener and a none too impressive run at the Tokyo Olympics either. Although he made the semis at both Masters 1000s during the US Open series (Toronto & Cincinnati), it was a third round loss to Carlos Alcaraz that ended his US Open campaign.

The Greek looked in good touch to kick off his Indian Wells campaign but joined a number of top ranked players in crashing out in the middle of week two, with a quarter-final loss to eventual runner-up Nikoloz Basilashvili.

A second round loss to Tiafoe last week in Vienna after being well placed for a victory was a clear indication that it may well have been a long enough season for the Greek already, who is starting to think of the off-season and 2022.

Lucky Loser Popyrin Off To Flier

Rising young Aussie Alexei Popyrin began his season well, winning his first senior ATP title in Singapore in February, defeating Alexander Bublik in the final.

However, there remains the underlying feeling  he has failed to build on that success, although he did reach the third round of the US Open, his best showing to date at a Grand Slam. In the course of that run, he beat Grigor Dimitrov, his third win over a top twenty player in 2021.

After New York he took a break before Indian Wells where he got to the second round before losing to Hubert Hurkacz. First round losses at Antwerp and Vienna followed and the Aussie was lucky to make it to the opener here being a Lucky Loser himself.

Up against compatriot and number one Aussie Alex DeMinaur it was a scintillating display by Popyrin looking in fine nick as he only dropped three games for a 6-0, 6-3 win and a spot in the next round.

Tsitsipas v Popyrin Prediction and Tip

While on paper, Tsitsipas starts as a strong favorite, current form and confidence calls for a closer battle. Tsitsipas has looked tired and error prone of late and some of it will be the cumulative effect of a long season. On the other hand, Popyrin will be confident after his convincing and unexpected opening win.

Expect a good contest with Tsitsipas’ experience prevailing in three sets.
