Consistent Sinner Favourite to Win the Title in Stockholm

Top seed Jannik Sinner of Italy will begin his Stockholm campaign in the Round of 16 on Wednesday.

The 20-year-old Italian has played top-notch tennis this season, winning four titles and finishing runner-up at the ATP 1000 Miami Open. The result? Sinner, who began the season as No. 37th in the world, broke into the top 10 last week. He peaked to a career-high No. 9 on November 1 but fell a place, following the first round defeat to Carlos Alcaraz at the Paris Masters.

The Italian brings a 45-20 season record to Stockholm. He is 35-12 on hard courts and will be looking to get a few more wins under his belt before the end of the season.

Sinner, who won the Sofia Open title last year, began the 2021 season by capturing the Melbourne-1 crown. He narrowly missed out on a first Masters title after going down to Hubert Hurkacz in the Miami final but stayed consistent throughout the season, clinching three more titles in Washington, Sofia and Antwerp.

Murray Holds off Durasovic

Andy Murray got off to a winning start in Stockholm as he knocked out Norway’s Viktor Durasovic in the first round on Tuesday.

The former No. 1 got off to a flying start, racing to a 5-0 lead before closing out the first set 6-1. The second set was anything but easy as the Norwegian upped his level despite being broken in the very first game of the set. He drew level in the sixth game and forced the tiebreak, but couldn’t capitalise on the set point at 6-7 and Murray finally converted a third match point to win the one hour and 38 minute contest 6-1, 7-6 (9-7).

Last week, Murray squandered seven match points against Dominik Koepfer in the first round of the Paris Masters, going down in three sets. It was the first time since the U.S. Open, and only the third time this year, that Murray had lost his first round match.

Thanks to Tuesday’s win, the 34-year-old Scot improved to 14-13 for the season.

Sinner v Murray Prediction and Tip

Chasing a fifth title of the season, Sinner will give his all in the opening match. Expect Murray to put up a stern resistance but the younger pro should come out on top.
