Maria Sakkari v Iga Swiatek Head to Head

Sakkari and Swiatek have been involved in two career, head-to-head meetings till date, with the former holding an emphatic 2-0 lead over the latter. They last met in the semifinals in Ostrava this year, with Sakkari prevailing in straight sets.

Sakkari Hopes to Keep Up Perfect Record Against Swiatek

Barring a rare misadventure at the Indian Wells Masters where she went out in the first round itself after losing in three sets to Victorija Goluvic of Switzerland, Sakkari has been in red-hot form at recent events and has been rather unfortunate not to add more titles to her kitty.

After losing to eventual champion Emma Raducanu of Great Britain in the last-four of this year’s US Open, the current World No.4 reached another Tour final in Ostrava only to fall to Estonian Anett Kontaveit in the championship clash.

Coming into the Kremlin Cup in the hope of lifting her second career title, Sakkari reached the second round by virtue of a walkover from her opening-round opponent, Anna Kalinskaya of Russia.

The Greek star followed up with an upset of two-time Grand lam champion Simona Halep in the quarter-final to set up a last-four showdown with Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova.

However, with the Russian leading 4-1 in the opening set, Sakkari conceded the tie with an injury. However, despite the injury setback and agonizing defeats, she did well enough across the season to seal her passage into the main draw of the WTA Finals.

She will open her campaign on Thursday with a round-robin clash with 2020 French Open champion Iga Swiatek. Though she will take the confidence and a surge of self-belief from her 2-0 head-to-head lead over the Pole into their third career, on-court meeting, Sakkari will be wary of the threat from a supremely-skilled opponent with already three career titles against her name.

Swiatek Hoping to Maintain Good Form

By her own tall standards, it won’t wrong to say that Swiatek failed to live up to her potential at recent events. Currenty ranked ninth in singles, the 20-year-old Pole went down fighting to Swiss miss and reigning Olympic gold medal holder Belinda Bencic in the last-16 of the US Open.

The Pole followed her disappointing finish at the Flushing Meadows with a run to the semifinals at Ostrava Open.  Though she made no bones about her title credentials with back-to-back straight-set wins over  Yulia Putintseva and Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan, she ran out of steam against a rampant Sakkari in the semifinal.

Though she extracted a pound of redemption from the Indian Wells Masters by the reaching the last-16 of one of the marquee events on the tennis calendar, she fell far short of where she had hoped to be coming into the tournament.

Determined to get her act together in the high-stakes WTA Finals, the Pole will her campaign with a round-robin fixture against Maria Sakkari. However, the task is easier said than done as she trails the Greecian 0-2 on the head-to-head count and has to be at her sleekest and sharpest on court if she has to put it past Sakkari.

Sakkari v Swiatek Prediction and Tip

This round-robin fixture has all the makings of a closely fought tie between two evenly-matched stars. However, Sakkari, with her 2-0 head-to-head lead over Swiatek, will hold a slight edge in Thursday’s clash.
