Korda Battles Back in Opening Match

Korda goes into hs match with Baez undefeated, but he was made to dig very deep to beat Hugo Gaston of France, the world number 67, who caused a surprise by reaching the quarter-finals of the French Open last week.

The American began strongly, breaking the Gaston serve in the opening game of the match, but the Frenchman, recovered, and then had two set points saved. Gaston went on to claim the subsequent tie-break.

Both men ha break opportunities in the second set, could not take them and it went to another tie break which again went the way of Gaston.

At that point, Korda was staring down the barrel, recovered, and broke Gaston twice as he cruised through the third set to love.

The fourth set also saw no breaks in regular time, although both men saved break points. This time it was Korda’s time to win the breaker, forcing the match into a fifth set.

Gaston’s resistance was broken and the American was able to sweep through the fifth set without dropping a game or being threatened on service.

Baez Shocks Local Favourite

Baez had qualified for this tournament on the back of his form on the Challenger tour in clay court events and was predicted to struggle on the hard indoor courts of Milan.

However, he pulled off something of an upset on Tuesday, by defeating the Italian, Lorenzo Musetti, in front of the home fans.

The Argentine began on the front foot, breaking Musetti in the opening game of the match and once more break earned him the first set.

With the Italian serve under constant pressure, it was no surprise when he was broken again allowing Baez to take a two set lead.

The third set, though, went to a tie-break, which Musetti won, raising hopes that he might be about to mount a comeback.

And he did have a break pointy opportunity in the fourth set which he squandered. That proved to be costly as Baez won the subsequent comeback, and, with it, the match.

Korda v Baez Prediction and Tip

Although both are unbeaten so far, Korda has far greater experience of the main tour, and is more at home on the indoor courts than the Argentine. The American will start the clear odds-on favourite for this match.
