Top seed Carlos Alacaraz, who began the tournament with a straight sets win over Denmark’s Holger Rune, notched a second straight sets win in the tournament on Wednesday to seal a place in the semifinals. Alcaraz struck 10 aces and 21 winners, while making 14 unforced errors. He won 88% points on the back of his first delivery and converted both the break points that he held in the match. Nakashima had five break points in the contest but he could the Spaniard saved four of them.

With the win Alcaraz went on top of Group A. He has 2 wins from 2 matches and a 6-0 set win-loss record He will be looking to head into the knockout stage with a perfect record.

The Spaniard, who began the year as the 141st ranked player in the world, is currently ranked No. 32, thanks to a 27-17 season, which also includes his maiden ATP title in Umag.

Cerundolo Out of Semis Contention

Facing Alcaraz on Thursday will be Juan Manuel Cerundolo, who is out of semifinal contention after two defeats in the first two matches.

The fifth seed Argentine, who lost to Nakashima in four in the first match, lost another four-set contest on Wednesday, going down to Holger Rune 1-4, 2-4, 4-1, 1-4.

Broken thrice in the match, the 19-year-old Cerundolo could convert just one of two break point opportunities.

The left-hander didn’t hold any break point in the first match, while getting broken four times by Nakashima in a 1-4, 4-3, 1-4, 0-4 defeat.

Ranked 91st in the world, Cerundolo had a 6-3 record in the season, winning the Cordoba Open title on his ATP main draw debut.
