Daniil Medvedev v Alexander Zverev Head to Head

The head-to-head is tied at 5-5 between these players with Medvedev now having won the last four matches between them. They have played twice this year, at the ATP Cup at the start of the season and at the Paris Masters last week, with the Russian prevailing both times.

Medvedev Prevails Against Hurkacz

Defending ATP Tour Finals champion Daniil Medvedev arrived in Turin with a lot more expected of him than in London a year ago.

Medvedev is not only the title holder, but also ranked world number two and the US Open champion where he stopped the Calendar Slam run of Novak Djokovic in the final.

Up against Hubert Hurkacz in the opener, Medvedev was serving clinically aided by the drier air, altitude and in turn faster courts. His Polish opponent was serving well too and using the net to his advantage.

With neither player troubled on serve, the set was headed for a tiebreaker where Hurkacz got the early mini-breaks and was up 6-2 with four set points. Although Medvedev saved three, it was a 7-5 tiebreak win for the Pole.

There was no looking back for the defending champion once he got the early break on the Hurkacz serve to go up 2-0 in the second set. Flawless Medvedev serving ensured it was a 6-3 set pushing the match into the decider.

Another early Medvedev break set the tone for the third set and although Hurkacz had a few openings, he was never able to pressurize the Russian’s serve as Medvedev clinched a 6-4 final set and match win.

Zverev Wins With Berrettini Retirement

2018 ATP Tour Finals winner Alexander Zverev comes to Turin at the back of a strong season that saw him winning Masters 1000 titles at Madrid and Cincinnati, as well as ATP 500s in Vienna and Acapulco as well as the all important Olympic gold medal.

Coming into his opener against Matteo Berrettini, Zverev was aware that he would need to negate the Berrettini serve and the home crowd and soon he was up against both.

With break points chances at different points in the opener, Zverev was unable to convert any and at 5-6 was in a tussle of a service game himself as he had to save set point and soak the pressure to take the set into a tie-breaker.

A roller coaster tiebreak followed with both players exchanging mini-breaks and set points until the German finally clinched the set 9-7 in the breaker.

Serving 0-1 in the second set, Berrettini felt a pull in his mid-section and immediately sought medical attention, only to return to serve one point in visual discomfort and withdraw from the match giving Zverev  a 1-0 lead in the group.

It is unclear whether Berrettini will continue in the tournament but it does look unlikely with the probability of another Italian Jannik Sinner replacing him at the event.

Medvedev v Zverev Prediction and Tip

In what is fast turning out to be one of the gloried rivalries on the circuit, the two players best positioned to win the title alongside Novak Djokovic, meet yet again here in Turin. While it will be down to who is better on the day, we can expect a much closer contest than the one we saw in Paris a little more than a week ago.

However, the Russian seems to have the mental edge of late in this match-up. Expect Medvedev to prevail in three sets.
