Sabalenka Rallies to Beat Swiatek to Keep Semifinal Hopes Alive

It’s a virtual quarterfinal between the World No. 2 Sabalenka and World No. 6 Sakkari, with the one winning the final group match going into the semifinals, while the one losing facing elimination.

Coming into the year-ending tournament following a quarterfinal exit at the Kremlin Cup, Sabalenka had a poor start, being outplayed by Paula Badosa 4-6, 0-6 in the first match. She fell behind in her second match as well, losing the first set to Iga Swiatek, but she bounced back to beat the Polish player 2-6, 6-2, 7-5.

A 10-time tour-level champion, Sabalenka won two titles this year in Abu Dhabi and Madrid, and heads into the final group match with a 45-17 record for the season.

The Belarusian also had runner-up finish in Stuttgart and reached the semifinals at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open.

Sakkari Sets Sight on Another Semifinal in 2021

She hasn’t added to her only title that she won in Rabat two years ago, but a 37-19 season would tell you how good has been Maria Sakkari’s year so far and that includes seven semifinal appearances. But only once has she gone past the final four stage this year, finishing runner-up in Ostrava.

Now, on Monday, she has a chance of reaching another semifinal. The World No. 6, who retired from her semifinal match at the Kremlin Cup a couple of weeks ago, began her WTA Finals campaign in emphatic style, defeating Iga Swiatek 6-2, 6-4. She wasn’t broken in the match and converted three of eight break points.

The Greek, however, couldn’t keep the winning run going in the next match, falling to the in-form Paula Badosa 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 in the second match.

The U.S. Open and Roland Garros semifinalist will be hoping to extend her season with a victory on Monday.

Sabalenka v Sakkari Prediction and Tip

With this being a virtual knockout match, expect it to be a hard-fought contest, with a third set separating the two. Sabalenka’s dominance over Sakkari will give her the psychological edge. She should eventually come out on top.
