A Year To Remember For Sinner

2021 was a truly standout season for Jannik Sinner. The 20-year-old might be learning his trade on the ATP tour, but he possesses a game and the mentality good enough to challenge the top players in men’s tennis.

Sinner’s breathtaking season began in earnest in Australia, where he won the first of his four titles in 2021 at the Great Ocean Road Open – saving a match point in his semifinal win over Karen Khachanov. It served as a springboard to even more success at both tour-level and Grand Slam level.

The power-hitting San Candido native collected titles in Washington, Sofia, and Antwerp, and reached the biggest final of his fledgling career at the Miami Masters in early April. Sinner also excelled at the Grand Slams –  reaching the second week of French Open and US Open.

He made a late push to qualify for the ATP Finals, eventually falling short in the last week of the regular season. Although he was an alternate in Turin, he will want to headline the event this time round proper.

Duckworth Cracks The Top 50 Code

The story of James Duckworth screams patience and perseverance. The 29-year-old has made more trips to the operation table than he can remember, but he still retained hope of returning to compete at the top of men’s tennis.

Duckworth has been handsomely rewarded for his stoic attitude. He played 60 matches across all levels in 2021, winning 36 matches. 27 of his wins were recorded on hard courts, including indoors.

The 29-year-old Aussie was undoubtedly one of ATP’s top performers last September where he won an impressive 11 matches from 12 outings. That streak saw him clinch his 12th Challenger title in Istanbul and reach his first ATP final in Nur-Sultan, where he was denied ultimate glory by Kwon Soon Woo.

Those exploits towards the backend of last season (which included a maiden Masters 1000 quarterfinal in Bercy) uplifted Duckworth to career-high World No. 47. Can he steer Australia to success in the third edition of the ATP Cup?

Sinner v Duckworth Prediction and Tip

Duckworth should have a lion’s share of support from the home faithful and will likely make this encounter highly competitive. But the odds suggest it is hard to fathom an upset in this one. The games market might be more of a wise pick.
