Tsitsipas Pulls Out of Opener
Stefanos Tsitsipas pulled out of his opening Group match against Hubert Hurkacz of Poland on Saturday with an elbow injury. He was replaced by World No. 1076 Aristotelis Thanos, who was easily beaten by the World No. 9 in straight sets.
Tsitsipas had played just one match at the season-ending ATP Finals in November before withdrawing from the tournament with the same injury, which needed a surgery.
According to the Greek, the recovery from the surgery is on track for the Australian Open and Saturday’s withdrawal was just a precautionary measure. They will assess the situation on day-to-day basis.
Tsitsipas has a 3-2 record at the ATP Cup, winning one and losing two in 2020, and winning both his singles matches in 2021.
He had a pretty good season last year, finishing with a 55-19 record, which included two titles. One of those came in Monte-Carlo, his first Masters 1000 title and the other came in Lyon.
The 23-year-old also produced his best Grand Slam result last year, reaching his maiden major final at Roland Garros, before going down to Novak Djokovic in five.
A seven time champion and 10-time runner-up on the Tour, Tsitsipas has a splendid record on both hard and clay courts, winning four titles on the former and three on the latter.
Last season, Tsitsipas finished with a 32-13 record on hard courts, reaching just one final in Acapulco, which he lost to Alexander Zverev. In contrast, he featured in four finals on clay, winning two and finishing runners-up in Barcelona and Roland Garros.
Tsitsipas, along with partner Michail Pervolarakis, however featured in the doubles match against the Polish duo of Hurkacz and Jan Zielinski later Saturday, winning the contest 6-4, 5-7, 10-8.

Schwartzman Makes Quick Work of Basilashvili
Diego Schwartzman began the New Year with a dominating performance against Georgia’s Nikoloz Basilashvili in a Group D match on Saturday.
The Argentine won 80% first serve points and converted 5 of 9 break points in the match to win the contest 6-1, 6-2 in just 57 minutes.
Argentina also won the No. 2 singles match and the doubles encounter to blank Georgia 3-0.
The 29-year-old Schwartzman broke Basilashvili twice in the first set and thrice in the second, while getting broken just once in the fourth game of the second set.
With the win, Schwartzman improved his ATP Cup record to 3-4.
The World No. 13 was 38-23 last season, which included a run to the title in Buenos Aires in March. He also finished runner-up to Jannik Sinner in Antwerp.
A winner of four ATP titles from 12 finals, Schwartzman has a winning record on both clay and hard surfaces. He was 24-14 on hard courts last season and has a 104-85 career record on the surface.
He will be looking to keep Argentina’s winning run going against Greece on Monday.
