Carreno Busta Shakes off Early Nerves to Beat Tabilo
Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta overcame a shaky start to beat Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo in straight sets in the no. 2 singles match in Group A. Roberto Bautista Agut also won his singles and Spain won the doubles as well to blank Chile 3-0 in the first tie on Saturday.
Broken early in the first set, Carreno Busta went 0-3 down before winning two consecutive games to make a mini recovery. But Tabilo restored the advantage immediately with a second break in the sixth game, taking a 2-4 lead. The Spaniard, however fought back, breaking the Chilean two more times to take the first set.
The second set started in a similar fashion with Tabilo getting an early break and going up 0-3. He maintained the lead this time though and had a set point on Carreno Busta’s serve at 3-5 (30-40), but the Spaniard saved the break point and then got the break back, taking the set to the tie-break.
Carreno Busta lost serve early in the tiebreak but yet again fought his way back to take the contest 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) in an hour and 54 minutes.
The Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist, Carreno Busta had a successful 2021 season, winning two titles in Marbella and Hamburg (both on clay) and finishing runner-up in Metz (hard). He finished the season with a 38-18 win-loss record.
Thanks to Saturday’s win, the 30-year-old is now 3-1 in the ATP Cup. Last year, he won both his Round Robin singles against Australia and Greece but lost his semifinal singles match against Italy’s Fabio Fognini.

Durasovic Loses Opener
Norway’s Viktor Durasovic lost his opening singles match against Serbia’s Filip Krajinović on Saturday.
The 24-year-old Norwegian right-hander, who lost all three of his singles matches in his only previous ATP Cup appearance in 2020, has a 0-4 singles record in the tournament and is yet to win a set.
On Saturday, Krajinovic needed just an hour and 14 minutes to beat Durasovic. The Serbian faced little resistance in the first set, dropping just four points on his serve and breaking the Norwegian twice. Durasovic, however, put up a tough fight in the second, but eventually lost the contest 6-2, 7-5.
Durasovic, later partnered with Casper Ruud, for the doubles match, but fell to the Serbian pairing of Nikola Cacic and Krajinovic, as Serbia took the tie 2-1.
Mostly seen on the ITF circuit, Durasovic has a 7-14 win-loss record at the tour level and will have his task cut out against Careno Busta.
Carreno Busta v Durasovic Prediction and Tip
Carreno Busta was given a hard time by Tabilo, but he still found a way to win. Expect him to put up a better display on Monday. He should beat the Norwegian without much trouble.
