Elina Svitolina had an ordinary 2021 season by her standards, as a result of which she ended the year outside the top 10 for the first time in four years.
The Ukrainian did lift her 16th WTA title by winning the WTA 250 in Chicago and also showed nerves of steel as she fought back from a set down to win the bronze medal for her country at the Olympics. Other than those significant accomplishments, Svitolina struggled for most parts of the season.
The 27-year-old former World no. 3 also reached the semifinals in Miami and Stuttgart last season, but was knocked out by World No. 1 Ash Barty on both the occasions.
Barty had also beaten her in the finals of the WTA Finals in 2019, a year after the Ukrainian captured the crown by beating Sloane Stephens in the final.
A two-time Grand Slam semifinalist, Svitolina will be featuring in the Adelaide International tournament for the first time. A solid player on all surfaces, Svitolina has a 67% win record on hard courts and was 31-13 on the surface last year.
Hoping to break back into the top 10, Svitolina will need to start the season well and will be a favourite to win against Gasanova on Monday.

Emerging Gasanova Aiming to Make an Impact
2021 was a significant year for Russia’s Anastasia Gasanova. The 22-year-old made her main debut in Abu Dhabi and then later reached her first-ever WTA quarterfinal in St. Petersburg.
At the Astana Open in Nur Sultan, Gasanova went on to reach a second quarterfinal of the season but yet again failed at that juncture.
The Russian had an impressive start in the season opener in Abu Dhabi last year. Coming through the qualifiers she beat Germany’s Mona Barthel in the first round and then got her first-ever top 10 win, defeating Karolina Pliskova in the Round of 32.
A winner of six ITF titles from 12 finals, Gasanova hasn’t played in Adelaide before but will be eager to get more significant wins on the tour this season.
