Former World No. 2 Petra Kvitova had a rather uneventful spell in 2021, as evident by her dearth of titles and a significant drop in the rankings.
Her sole highlight of the season was the Qatar Open title and by doing so, she became one of the few players to have won a singles trophy in each of the last three decades.
Apart from that, the 31-year-old reached the penultimate rounds in a good few tournaments but couldn’t make much of those runs. Towards the end of the season, she was a semifinalist in the Ostrava Open and had a third-round appearance in the Indian Wells Open. On the whole, she concluded 2021 with a ranking of #17 and a tally of 29-17.
With 28 singles titles to her name, Kvitova is certainly a force to be reckoned with. She has the experience and an impeccable pedigree to make easy work of Hon.

Hon, Hoping to Shine at Home
23-year-old Priscilla Hon spent the last season alternating between ITF and WTA events. She hasn’t got a lot to show for in either, barring a handful of early-round appearances.
In fact, Hon entered the pandemic-stricken season only in May at the French Open. Between that and her final stint at the ITF Macon, she recorded figures of 9-10 with her sole highlight being the round of 16 feat in the Columbus Challenger.
Currently ranked World No. 263, the Aussie faces a Herculean task of overcoming Kvitova in the Adelaide opener. After all, she lacks the exposure of playing at such a level, let alone against the top ones.
That said, there have been instances in the past where Kvitova has been stunned by lower-ranked players. If Hon can find it in her, she may very well start the season on a high note.
