Monteiro Earns Spot As Alternate

Following Sebastian Korda’s late withdrawal, Thiago Monteiro was next in line to secure his berth in the main draw of the 2022 Adelaide International. Monteiro chalked in semifinal points in the buildup to the Australian Open.

The 27-year-old from Fortaleza put together a fine win-loss record on the ATP Challenger last season, winning 19 matches from a possible 26. He won his sixth career title on tennis’ second tier in Braga, whilst also finishing runner-up in Bueno Aires and Campinas on home soil.

His record on the ATP Tour is not equally admirable. However, it is pertinent to note that Monteiro reached his first hard-court semifinal on the main tour at the Great Ocean Road Open at the start of last season.

To achieve that feat, he pulled off a stunning win over Carlos Alcaraz and then Jordan Thompson in the same day to reach the last four –  by far his best run on the surface.

Altmaier Sits At Career-High Ranking

Daniel Altmaier was a notable first-time winner on the ATP Challenger Tour last year. He won the title on home soil in Braunscheiwg, and further added two more trophies to his cabinet in Luedenscheid and Puerto Vallarta.

Considering that the German had an injury-ravaged season due to shoulder and abdominal issues, he was able to achieve a top-100 year-end ranking.

Now Altmaier sits comfortably at 84th in the standings, and will definitely earn a main draw spot at all four Grand Slams if his body holds up. For a player who reached the fourth round of the French Open as a qualifier less than 18 months ago, he is a personification of sheer grit.

Altmaier has one top-10 win in his resume – a stunning straight-sets win over Matteo Berrettini – in that two-week stay in Paris. While there was a feeling of desolation for missing out on the clay slam last season, he should be optimistic of his chances of making an imprint this year.
