Djere Left Out of Serbian ATP Cup Team

It is a measure of the strength in depth of Serbian tennis that the national team, even without Novak Djokovic, can afford to leave a player of Djere’s calibre out of their ATP Cup squad.

A clay court specialist, Djere has appeared in three senior ATP finals, all on his favourite surface, winning in Rio in 2019 and in Sardinia in 2020, whilst, last year in Parma he was beaten by the Italian Lorenzo Sonego.

He the went on to reach the third round of the French Open, matching his best showing at a Grand Slam.

Last year his best results tended to come on clay, with a semi-final in Hamburg, and again in Gstaad also to his credit.

He did though make the last eight in Nur-Sultan on a hard court but lost the last four matches he played in 2021, spread across different tournaments.

Spanish Clay Court Player Carballes-Baena

Like many Spanish players, Carballes-Baena was brought up on clay, and that is the surface on which he has achieved his greatest success as a professional.

He won his solitary, to date, senior ATP title in Chile in 2020. But has been prolific on the junior tours, appearing in 33 finals, three of them last year. Hew won a tournament in Belgrade in April, and then was runner-up in two events ion Spain in the autumn.

Australia has not been a happy hunting ground for him over the years, although, in 2021, he did win his first match at the Australian Open.

He will be looking to find some form ahead of this year’s tournament to try and improve on that record.

Djere v Carballes-Baena Prediction and Tip

This is a match between two men, both of whom would be happier on a clay court. However, Djere has the better all-round game, and, provided he plays to his full potential, should be able to ward off the challenge of the Spaniard.
