Jessica Pegula v Irina-Camelia Begu Head to Head
Begu actually has a winning record against the in-form American. She leads 1-0, having beaten Pegula in their only meeting at the Indian Wells 125K tournament in 2020.

Pegula Bound To Rise Even Higher
Jessica Pegula may well have reached her ceiling as a tennis player, but there is no doubt she can break new barriers during the 2022 season.
Pegula was among the most improved players on the WTA tour in 2021, winning 36 matches from a possible 55 – the most she has garnered in a single season on the professional circuit. While a second career title eluded her, she managed to climb to a career-high ranking of No. 18 during the close season.
Things were equally impressive off-court. Pegula became a newlywed during the off-season shortly after falling to Victoria Azarenka in the quarterfinals of Indian Wells.
The task awaiting the 27-year-old is to mimic last season’s results, starting with the Australian summer swing. Historically, Pegula has fared decently Down Under. She reached the final of the ASB Classic in Auckland in 2020. And at last year’s Australian Open she produced her best Grand Slam showing in reaching the last eight.

Begu Begins Her 14th Season On Main Tour
Since making her WTA main draw debut in Budapest in 2009, this will be Irina-Camelia Begu’s 14th season on the senior tour. She has amassed five career titles, the last of which came on the North American hard-court swing in 2020 at the Indian Wells 125K event.
Incidentally, it was at the same tournament where the Romanian defied the odds and shocked Jessica Pegula en route to the final. That week in California was of major relevance as far as her resurgence was concerned. Having dropped outside the world’s top 100 for the first time in five years, she managed to steadily work her way back that season.
In 2021, she did not add to her trophy collection but came agonizingly close at the WTA Cleaveland edition. Begu reached the final without dropping a set, but had the misfortune of drawing the in-form Estonian Anett Kontaveit.
Nonetheless, last season was a success. She won 17 matches – which is a better return for the first time in three years. She finished runner-up in the aforementioned final in Cleveland, while also making multiple quarterfinals at WTA 250 events.
Pegula v Begu Prediction and Tip
Begu’s win over Pegula in 2020 is slightly redundant. Moreover, her record of one win in six matches against Top 20 opposition in 2021 is not an overly optimistic stat. We are backing the American to cruise into the next round.
