Stefanos Tsitsipas v Nikoloz Basilashvili Head to Head

Tsitsipas leads 2-1 head to head. He beat Basilashvili at the Australian Open and in Beijing in 2019 but lost their most recent encounter at Indian Wells last year.

Tsitsipas Goes Down Fighting Against Schwartzman

Playing a first competitive singles match since his elbow surgery, Stefanos Tsitsipas put up a good fight before going down to Argentina’s Diego Schwartzman in a singles rubber on Monday.

Tsitsipas won the first set in the tie-break and then got a break in the very first game of the second set only to see that wiped off by the Argentine in the next game. Schwartzman got another break later in the set to force the decider and then sealed the match with two breaks in the third. The close to three-hour battle eventually ended with the Argentine winning 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 6-3, but the Greek was happy with the way he was able to compete in the contest and match Schwartzman’s level.

Tsitsipas, who had played just one match at the season-ending ATP Finals, in November before withdrawing from the tournament with the same injury, needed a surgery during the break last year. He had pulled out of the singles match against Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz in the first tie on Saturday.

He did feature in doubles though. Partnering with Michail Pervolarakis, Tsitsipas beat the Polish pair of Hurkacz and Jan Zielinski.

Following Monday’s defeat to Schwartzman, Tsitsipas is now 3-3 at the ATP Cup. He is coming off a 55-19 season, which included two titles. One of those came in Monte-Carlo, his first Masters 1000 title and the other in Lyon.

The 23-year-old also produced his best Grand Slam result last year, reaching his maiden major final at Roland Garros, before going down to Novak Djokovic in five.

A seven time champion and 10-time runner-up on the Tour, Tsitsipas will look to get back to winning ways on Wednesday.

Basilashvili Doesn’t Take the Court Against Poland

He was demolished by Diego Schwartzman in his singles match against Argentina on Saturday and didn’t take the court against Hubert Hurkacz in his singles rubber against Poland on Monday. It will be interesting to see if Basilashvili will take the court in the final tie against Greece. Both Georgia and Greece are out of contention after losing their first two ties and will be playing for pride on Wednesday.

The Georgian had a torrid time against Schwartzman on Saturday. He did get a break in the second set, but was broken twice in the first and thrice in the second for a 1-6, 2-6 hammering in 57 minutes.

A five-time champion on the Tour, Basilashvili had a solid 2021, finishing the season with a 33-27 record. He won the titles in Doha and Munich and finished runner-up to Cameron Norrie in Indian Wells — his maiden Masters 1000 final.

The 29-year-old will be hoping for a repeat performance this season, but hasn’t got off to a good start and may find things difficult in his last match of the tournament against Tsitsipas.

Tsitsipas v Basilashvili Prediction and Tip

Tsitsipas will be eager to avenge his Indian Wells defeat to Basilashvili. The Greek put up a good show against Schwartzman and will be the favourite to beat Basilashvili.
