Rafael Nadal v Ricardas Berankis Head to Head

This will be a first meeting between the 35-year-old Nadal and the 31-year-old Berankis.

Nadal Begins Preparations for Australian Open

Rafael Nadal will be playing his first tour-level singles match since his defeat to Lloyd Harris in the Round of 16 in Washington in August last year.

Hampered by a foot injury, the World No. 6 had to withdraw from Wimbledon and the U.S. Open. He did return for the Abu Dhabi Exhibition in December, but lost both his matches and then tested positive for COVID-19.

He returned to action in Melbourne on Tuesday, playing doubles with compatriot Jaume Munar. The Spanish pair won the first round contest against the Argentinian pair of Tomas Martin Etcheverry and Sebastian Baez.

In two weeks’ time, the former World No. 1 will be chasing his 21st Grand Slam title at the Australian Open. He won the Melbourne major in 2009 but hasn’t added to that title, finishing runner-up four times in the last decade.

Last year, the 88-time champion won the Rome Masters and the Barcelona Open titles, finishing the year with a 24-5 record. He will be hoping to start with a win in Melbourne.

Berankis Knocks Out Giron

Qualifier Ricardas Berankis moved into the second round of the Melbourne Summer Set with a straight sets win over America’s Marcos Giron in the first round on Wednesday.

The World No. 104 converted four of four break points and saved two of four in the match to beat the American 7-5, 6-4 in an hour and 31 minutes.

Berankis had qualified for the main draw with a straight sets win over Argentina’s Tomas Martin Etcheverry on Monday and a come-from-behind three-set win over Altug Çelikbilek on Tuesday.

The 31-year-old, who has a far better record on hard courts than any other surface, is coming off a 14-18 season which saw him reach the semifinals in Moscow.

The Lithuanian journeyman has scored just two top-10 wins in his career, and may find it very difficult to reach the quarterfinal in the tournament.
