Simona Halep v Elena-Gabriela Ruse Head to Head
Halep holds a 1-0 lead over her compatriot Ruse, last defeating her in their home tournament of the Cluj-Napoca Open in 2021 with 6-1, 6-2.

Simona Halep started her 2021 season with a strong win over the Australian Destanee Aiava in the Melbourne Summer Set opener. Needing just 78 minutes, the former World No. 1 prevailed with 6-4, 6-2, winning 79% of her first service points.
Looking at her previous season, it was mired with injuries and the consequent loss in form. Halep dropped out of the top 10 for the first time since 2014 and consequently ended the season at the #20 position. This was big, considering that she was in the top five in the year-end rankings in the last five seasons.
The 30-year-old missed out on the French Open and Wimbledon, along with a few other big events. She returned to action in the US Open swing but it wasn’t steady sailing. In fact, it wasn’t until the closing events of the year that Halep looked like her former self.
She was the runner-up in Cluj-Napoca – a feat that she followed with a semifinal run in the Linz Open.

Ruse Dispatches Rodionova
Elena-Gabriela Ruse also enjoyed a good start to her campaign in Melbourne as she moved past Arina Rodionova with 6-3, 6-2. It was a confident performance by Ruse which, in turn, should prime her quite nicely for the clash with Halep.
2021 was a remarkable season 24-year-old, as she moved up some 90 odd places in the singles ranking. She started the season outside the top 150 and ended the year as World No. 85.
Her tally for the year stood at 31-16, supported by her title run in Hamburg European Open and the runner-up feat in the Palermo Open. Ruse achieved these as a qualifier.
What she needs now are a couple of big wins under her belt to truly elevate her confidence. So far, she has certainly proven that she is capable of putting up a good fight.
Halep v Ruse Prediction and Tip
Halep will start as the favourite, given her exceptional pedigree, experience, and superior track record in Australia. That said, these are still early days and upsets seem to be the norm. Ruse is a formidable opponent and can make things difficult for her opponent.
Expect a good game of tennis where Halep should emerge as the winner.
