Nadal Triumphs on Return
Rafael Nadal has made a winning return on the Tour. Playing his first singles match since his Round of 16 defeat in Washington in August last year, the Spaniard earned a straight sets win against World No. 104 Ricardas Berankis in the second round.
The top seed, who received a first-round bye, dropped just four points on his serve in a dominating first set display, which saw him break his opponent twice before wrapping up the set in 32 minutes. He faced some resistance in the second set though, as the Lithuanian went toe-to-toe, breaking back twice to stay in the hunt. But the former No. 1 was in no mood of taking the match to the decider as he broke Berankis to love in the final game of the match to make a triumphant start to 2022.
Nadal won 78% first-serve points, struck 17 winners and made just 13 unforced errors for his 6-2, 7-5 victory.
Nadal had made a return to the tour with a doubles win in the first round on Tuesday. The 20-time Grand Slam winner pulled out of the doubles tournament after his win over Berankis due to fatigue.
Nadal will look to make the most of this tournament as he prepares for the first grand slam of the year, beginning January 17. The 88-time tour-level champion won the Australian Open title in 2009 but hasn’t added to that title, finishing runner-up four times in the last decade.

Griekspoor On a 28-Match Winning Streak
Tallon Griekspoor, who stunned seventh seed Dominik Koepfer in the first round, pulled off a three-set win over local hope Alexei Popyrin in the second round on Thursday, and extended his winning streak to 28 matches.
The 25-year-old Dutchman, who had a terrific 2021 season at the Challenger level, reaching eight finals and winning all eight of them, has not lost a match since his second round defeat to Novak Djokovic at the U.S. Open. Since then he won a David Cup match against Uruguay and captured five Challenger titles.
Now he seems to have carried that form to the senior level, winning his first two matches in Melbourne.
On Thursday, the World No. 65 breezed past Popyrin in the first set, but allowed the Aussie to come back in the second. Griekspoor saved six break points in the third game on the second set, but Popyrin eventually converted the seventh to get his nose ahead and then maintained the lead to force the decider.
Griekspoor seized control of the third by breaking Popyrin in the fourth game and then held on to the lead for a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 victory in an hour and 58 minutes.
In the first round, the Dutchman was broken just once, while he converted three of six break points on his way to a 6-3, 6-4 win against Koepfer.
Nadal v Griekspoor Prediction and Tip
Nadal will be wary of Griekspoor’s unbeaten streak, even though they all came at the Challenger level. Expect the Dutchman to put up a great fight but eventually the World No. 6 should move into the semifinals.
