Munar Dumps Out Laaksonen
Jaume Munar doesn’t have a great reputation on hard courts, but the Spaniard is two from two from his first two matches on the surface this year.
Munar defeated South Africa’s Kevin Anderson 6-4, 6-4 in the first round on Wednesday and followed it up with a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Swiss lucky loser Henri Laaksonen in the second round on Thursday.
The Spaniard, who wasn’t broken by Anderson in the first match, outplayed Laaksonen in the first set of the second round. He was also in control of the second set as well following an early break of serve, but the Swiss made a mini comeback, late in the set. He got the break back and saved four match points to stay in the hunt. But Munar broke the Swiss a second time in the set to seal a 6-1, 7-5 victory.
Munar served 11 aces, won 85% first-serve points and converted five of 10 break points in an hour and 23 minute contest.
The World No. 77, who reached a maiden ATP final in Marbella in 2021, only to finish runner-up, is coming off a 12-19 season. In his last action of 2021, he played in a Challenger final in Brasilia finishing runner-up to Federico Coria.

Cressy Saves Two Match Points To Stun Opelka
Qualifier Maxime Cressy kept his winning run going in Melbourne, reaching the quarterfinals after a gruelling two-hour-and-41-minute duel with Reilly Opelka.
The World No. 112 Cressy served 17 aces against Opelka’s 29 and had 48 winners, nine fewer than his opponent. The 24-year-old also made six more unforced errors than Opelka’s nine, but despite those numbers he managed to scrape through, thanks to his superior performance in the second and third set tiebreaks.
Opelka, who converted one of 10 break points, got the only break of the match in the first set. Neither of the two could break again in the match as both displayed solid service performances. But it was Cressy who topped the tiebreaks to score a 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (11-9) victory. It was in the dramatic third-set tiebreak when cressy had to save two match points before finally converting his third match point.
The 24-year-old Cressy, who qualified for the main draw by defeating Portugal’s Joao Sousa and Italy’s Andrea Vavassori respectively in the qualifying rounds, had begun hi campaign with a 6-3, 6-0 drubbing of Australia’s Rinky Hijikata in the first round.
Munar v Cressy Prediction and Tip
Fatigue could be an issue for Cressy after a mentally draining contest on Thursday. It was also his fourth match in four days. His opponent, meanwhile, will be much fresher having breezed past his first two opponents. Expect Munar to keep the rhythm going in the quarterfinal and advance to the last four.
