Rafael Nadal v Emil Ruusuvuori Head to Head

Nadal and Ruusuvuori have never been involved in a head-to-head clash before. However, with the 20-time Grand Slam champion back in the swing of things and the Finn, too, in red hot form in the Melbourne so far, expect an explosive battle as the two go head-to-head for the first time.

Back in the Swing of Things, Nadal Eyes Melbourne Title

Back after injury-plagued season that nixed his chances of going past Roger Federer in the race for most Grand Slam titles, Nadal announced his return to singles action with a typically dominant and clinical straight-set win over Lithuanian Ricardas Berankis.

Launching his new season at the ongoing Melbourne Summer Set, the Spaniard brought out his trademark weapons to seize the initiative early in the piece and took the opening set by a comfortable 6-2 margin.

Though his opponent did try to make match of it in the second set, the superstar Spaniard was wary of easing his hold on the contest. Nadal did manage to secure another break of serve and held on to his advantage to cruise to a comprehensive 6-2, 7-5 win.

The win saw the champion set up a clash with Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor in his next. However, Griekspoor pulled out just ahead of the clash with an injury, giving Nadal a passage to the semifinals by virtue of a tiebreaker.

Between the Spaniard, who is currently ranked sixth in singles, and a place in the title clash stands in-form Finnish star Emil Ruusuvuori. The 95th-ranked Finn has racked up three wins in the tournament so far and will be tough for Nadal to overcome on Saturday.

However, Nadal, will all the skills and experience at his disposal, should fancy seeing off the Finn in this last-four clash.

Ruusuvuori Sets Sights on Biggest Career Scalp

Currently ranked inside the top-100 in singles, Ruusuvuori got his new season off to a blazing start with a win in his opening clash in the ongoing  Melbourne Summer Set.

Drawn to face Argentinian Sebastian Baez in his tournament opener, the Finn quelled stiff resistance  from his opponent to take the opening set via a tiebreak. The second set was more of a cakewalk for Russuvuori as  he dominated the Argentinian to eventually cruise home 7-6 (7-2), 6-1.

After prevailing in a fiercely fought three-setter in his next against Australian Jordan Thompson, the Finn produced another stellar performance to down Slovakian Alex Molcan in his next and advance to the semifinals.

However, he faces his toughest opponent yet in the last four  in the form of 20-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal. Though not a champion of hard courts, the Spaniard showed his trademark skills and grit in his win over Berankis and the Finn needs to get all facets of his game right if he has to upend the champion in the weekend clash on Saturday.

Nadal v Ruusuvuori Prediction and Tip

While Nadal’s superior ranking and years of experience will make him an obvious favorite going into Saturday’s semifinal battle, Russuvuori, on current form, will fancy going for an upset.
