He then became involved in a tight battle with Matteo Berrettini, the Italian number one.

Augur-Aliassime Recovers After Difficult Start

The Canadian number one did not start the New Year well, losing his opening group match to Taylor Fritz of the USA, despite taking the opening set on a tie-break.

However, he then recovered to defeat Cameron Norrie of Great Britain in straight sets, before facing a must-win match against the world number three, Alexander Zverev of Germany.

Augur-Aliassime began strongly, breaking Zverev in the opening game of the match, and although he missed further break points opportunities to extend his lead, he was able to consolidate that break to clinch the first set.

The second set went with serve, until it was the Canadian’s turn to be broken. However, he hit back to level straight away, only for another break of serve enabling Zverev to take the match into a third set.

This time it was the turn of the German to wilt under the pressure. He was broken once and then, serving to stay in the match, was broken again.

Augur-Aliassime will take great heart from taking such a big scalp so early in the season.
