Big Responsibility on Medvedev’s Shoulders
The Russian number one has a big responsibility on his shoulders, knowing that he needs to win this match for his team, knowing that Denis Shapovalov will start the clear favourite in the other singles match against Roman Safiullin.
Like his opponent on Saturday, his 2022 did not start on the best of notes, as he suffered a surprise defeat to Ugo Humbert of France in his opening group match, despite taking the firsts et, losing the next two, in a match decided in a tie-break.
It was important that he recovered from that, and he did that well, with a convincing straight sets win over Alex de Minaur of Australia, the world number 34, in a match in which the Russian won 11 games in a row before a late stumble aw him make things harder for himself than they should have been.
He then became involved in a tight battle with Matteo Berrettini, the Italian number one.
However, Berettini dropped his serve early in the third set and, that proved to be decisive. Medvedev ensured there was no chance of a comeback, helping book Russia’s place in the semi-finals.

Augur-Aliassime Recovers After Difficult Start
The Canadian number one did not start the New Year well, losing his opening group match to Taylor Fritz of the USA, despite taking the opening set on a tie-break.
However, he then recovered to defeat Cameron Norrie of Great Britain in straight sets, before facing a must-win match against the world number three, Alexander Zverev of Germany.
Augur-Aliassime began strongly, breaking Zverev in the opening game of the match, and although he missed further break points opportunities to extend his lead, he was able to consolidate that break to clinch the first set.
The second set went with serve, until it was the Canadian’s turn to be broken. However, he hit back to level straight away, only for another break of serve enabling Zverev to take the match into a third set.
This time it was the turn of the German to wilt under the pressure. He was broken once and then, serving to stay in the match, was broken again.
Augur-Aliassime will take great heart from taking such a big scalp so early in the season.
Medvedev v Augur-Aliassime Prediction and Tip
Medvedev has won both their previous two matches, and will probably need to make it three to keep his side’s chances alive. Augur-Aliassime, though, having beaten the world number three already, will harbour hopes he can go one better in Australia.
