Marin Cilic v Karen Khachanov Head to Head
The players have met twice with Cilic winning on both occassions. Their most recent meeting was in the round of 16 at the St. Petersburg in 2021, with Cilic winning a tight three-setter.

Marin Cilic is no stranger to the ATP tour, being the 2014 US Open winner, and the runner-up at the 2017 Wimbledon and 2018 Australian Open as well as being ranked as high as number three in the ATP rankings.
The Croat has had a difficult last couple of seasons with his ranking dropping considerably due to a mix of injury lay-offs and indifferent form and results. However, Cilic looked to be getting back into form with two ATP titles in 2021- the Stuttgart Open on grass and later in the year the St. Petersburg Open.
In both tournaments, Cilic came out victorious against the up and coming ‘Next Gen’ of tennis which would have done wonders for his confidence.
Seeded third here in Adelaide, the Croat has had a good week thus far, playing Brazilian Thiago Montiero and Serbian Laslo Dere.
Cilic looked untroubled in both matches, prevailing in straight sets each time and setting himself up for a shot at a deep run this weekend with the competition getting stiffer.

Khachanov Hoping For Strong ’22 Season
Once billed as the one of the Next Gen to watch out for after winning the Paris Masters in 2018 and breaking into the top ten in the ATP rankings, it has not been the best of runs for Russian Karen Khachanov in recent times.
While his Next Gen peers of the likes of Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev and others have achieved noteworthy accolades in recent times, Khachanov has not been able to put together any consistent run of form in the last couple seasons.
Seeded second here in Adelaide, it has been a mixed week for Khachanov. Pushed in his opener by American veteran Steve Johnson, the Russian prevailed in a deciding set. Khachanov looked in better touch in the final eight recording a straight sets win against Belarusian Egor Gerasimov.
The Russian will be hoping for a title run this weekend, which will do a world of good to his self-belief going into the first major of the year.

A lot on the line for both players and it will come down to who is better on the day, especially at the key moments. Expect a tight contest with Cilic’s experience and recent good run of form prevailing in a three setter.
