The past week has been a terrific one for Naomi Osaka. Starting as the top seed in Melbourne, she has so far moved past the likes of Alize Cornet, Maryna Zanveska, and Andrea Petkovic.
In fact, after surviving that three-set hiccup against Cornet, the Japanese routed Zanveska 6-1, 6-1 and knocked out the German 6-1, 7-5.
The former world number one had a tumultuous spell in 2021, mired with mental health woes and the consequent time off from tennis. After winning the Australian Open title, she reached the quarterfinal in Miami and that was pretty much it. Osaka played a handful of events but couldn’t do that well – owing to which she also slipped outside the top 10.
Her last event was the US Open where she lost to Leylah Fernandez following which, the 24-year-old took the break from the rest of the season.
Nonetheless, with four majors and numerous other trophies, Osaka has a formidable legacy that is bound to make her opponents sweat.

Kudermetova, Continues to Shine
World No. 31 Veronika Kudermetova has so far had a good run in Melbourne. Starting as the number three seed, she has had more or less a convenient route to the semis.
In the opener, the Russian defeated Viktoria Kuzmova and later, the likes of Madison Brengle and Anastasia Potapova. The last two came on the back of three-setters while the first one was a straight-set win.
Kudermetova enjoyed a good run in 2021, reaching the final in Abu Dhabi and later, winning the Charleston Open. She also did well in the doubles discipline, winning the title in Istanbul Cup and reaching the final in Wimbledon and Indian Wells Open.
Although her resume is a bit thin when it comes to top 10 wins, the 24-year-old has proven that she has the skillset to play big matches.
Osaka v Kudermetova Prediction and Tip
Osaka is pegged to take this match in straight sets but seeing that Kudermetova’s game has improved greatly, it may not be the easiest of the wins. Expect a thrilling encounter.
