Fabio Fognini v Nick Kyrgios Head to Head

In their only previous encounter, Kyrgios had defeated Fognini in the 2018 edition of the Miami Masters, winning 6-3, 6-3 to make the round of 16.

Fognini Hasn’t Had the Best Couple of Seasons

It had been a strong start to the 2020 season for Fognini before the pandemic struck the world. And since then, his results have not quite been the same again.

The Italian followed that up with a 1-6 win-loss record that season before winning just 22 matches in 2021 of the 46 he featured in.

And again, like the previous season, Fognini reached the fourth round at Australian Open but then in the 20 tournaments that followed, managed to win three matches in a row only once.

This included a three-match losing streak and a 1-6 record to end the year, much like what had been the case in 2020.

Can he start off on a more positive note this time around against a maverick of an opponent?

Kyrgios Hasn’t Played Too Much Tennis

For a former world number 13 to have played only 25 matches over the past couple of seasons is quite surprising but then nothing about Kyrgios’ tennis should surprise anyone anyway.

Having won two ATP titles in 2019, Kyrgios seemed to have gotten through a slump thanks to his sudden fall in interest. Injuries and illnesses might have played a part too but Kyrgios would have loved to do a lot better than 7-8 win-loss record he had last season.

This includes five-match losing streak he ended 2021 on, having reached the third round at both, Australian Open and Wimbledon. Interestingly, he did not feature in a single match between those two Grand Slam competitions.

That said, Kyrgios is also one who doesn’t require too many wins under his belt to get going anyway. The Aussie can be expected to probe his opponent – if he’s not too bored that is.

Fognini v Kyrgios Prediction and Tip

This is a hard one to call but we expect there to be fireworks at some level. Interestingly Kyrgios is a bookmakers’ favourite and we will have to go with that on this hard court surface.
