Badosa Loses Season Opener

One of the six players to break into the top 10 on the back of tremendous performances last season, Paula Badosa had a false start this year, losing in the first round of the Adelaide International to Victoria Azarenka.

Badosa had claimed her maiden WTA 1000 title by defeating Azarenka in the final of the Indian Wells open last year. The 24-year-old Spaniard, who had never reached a WTA final before 2021,  also reached the final in Belgrade, winning the title by defeating Ana Konhjuh.

Apart from those two titles, Badosa’s 43-17 season included maiden semifinal appearances at the WTA Finals and in Madrid and a Grand Slam quarterfinal debut at the French Open.

One of the better servers in the women’s game, Badosa is currently sitting on a career-high ranking of No. 8. Making her debut in Sydney, Badosa will be hoping to start on a winning note and build from there on.

Ostapenko Will Aim for a Good Start

World no. 28 Jelena Ostapenko will be making her third main draw appearance in Sydney after losing in the first rounds in 2018 and 2019.

The Latvian claimed her maiden WTA 500 title in Eastborune by defeating Annett Konatveit in the final last year. 2021 was one of the better seasons for Ostapenka recently. The 2017 French Open champion finished with a 27-18 record, which also included a runner-up finish in Luxembourg.

A former world No. 5  and a winner of four WTA titles, the 24-year-old also reached the semifinals of the Indian Wells Open for the first time last season, defeating World No. 4 Iga Swiatek en route but she eventually fell to Victoria Azarenka in the semifinal.

The Latvian will look to get off the blocks quickly and set the tone for the season.
