Johnson Battles Through Qualifying
Johnson is one of the most experienced players on the tour, beginning now his 15th season as professional.
And that career has yielded a fair degree of success with six finals to his name, although he has not won a tournament since 2018, and will be looking for an improvement in form over 2021, where the best he managed was a quarter-final appearance in Washington before losing to Jannik Sinner.
Last week in Adelaide he faced another Australian wildcard in his opening match of 2022, Aleksandar Vukic, beating the world number 156 in three sets.
He then lost his second round match to the Olympic silver medallist and world number 29, Karen Khachanov, but did have the satisfaction of taking the Russian to three sets.
Johnson was forced to enter the qualifying competition for the second iteration in Adelaide, and was made to battle by the German Oscar Otte in his first match, dropping the first set before coming back to take the next two.
His subsequent defeat of Thiago Monteiro of Brazil, ranked 89th in the world on Monday was more straightforward, taking the first set on a tie-break, and then clinching the set with the only break of serve in the match.

Local Wildcard Bolt Hopes to Make a Mark
Bolt has been given a wildcard in Sydney and it has also been confirmed that he will be given a wildcard for his home Grand Slam in Melbourne, starting next week, for the fifth successive year.
His best performance came in 2019 when he beat Jack Sock for his first Grand Slam win, eventually losing in the third round to Alexander Zverev.
Normally he is to be found on the Challenger tour, where he has appeared in nine finals, winning three of them, including last year in Nottingham, where he came through qualifying.
The next month, he reached his second quarter-final on the main tour in Los Cabos, Mexico.
Last week he was beaten in the first round in Adelaide by the Argentine clay court specialist Juan-Manuel Cerundulo.
Johnson v Bolt Prediction and Tip
Although Bolt will have the advantage of playing in local conditions and the support from the home crowd, it is difficult to see him upsetting an experienced pro like Johnson, who has seen it all before.
