Fabio Fognini v Brandon Nakashima Head to Head

Nakashima won their only meeting last year in San Diego, fighting back from a set down to win the first round contest.

Fognini Cruises Past Altmaier

World No. 36 Fabio Fognini began his 2022 season with a straight sets victory over German qualifier Daniel Altmaier.

Fognini won 81% first serve points, struck 26 winners and made just four unforced errors on his way to a 6-3, 7-5 win in an hour and 25 minutes.

Fognini didn’t face a break point in the first set, while he converted one of his two breaking chances to wrap-up the set with ease.

The German, who didn’t make an unforced error in the entire match, made things interesting in the second set. He got his first break of the match in the 10th game of the second set and prevented Fognini from closing out the match after he had gone a break up early.

Fognini, however, restored the advantage the very next game and then held on to dispatch the lucky loser.

A nine-time tour-level champion, Fognini is at his best on clay courts. It’s also been the most productive for the Italian, who has won eight of his titles on the surface.

Although he doesn’t have a winning record on hard courts, he is vastly experienced, which is reflected in his 143-163 record on the surface.

He began the season well last year, but didn’t end it well, winning just one match from his last five tournaments. He would be relieved to have started the 2022 campaign with a victory, and will hope to get a few more wins ahead of the Australian Open.

Nakashima Holds Off Veselý

Brandon Nakashima was impressive last season and the 20-year-old seems to have picked from where he left.

The American, who reached back-to-back finals in Los Cabos and Atlanta and finished the season as a semifinalist at the ATP NextGen Finals, began the 2022 campaign with a solid win over Czech qualifier Jiří Veselý.

Solid on serve, none of the players gave away a break point in the match, but it was Nakashima’s dominance in the tiebreaks that helped him overcome the Czech player. Nakashima allowed Veselý just two points in the first set tiebreak and none in the second as he took the contest 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-0) in an hour and 49 minutes.

Nakashima struck 12 aces, 32 winners and nine unforced errors.

The American, who was ranked 170th at the start of 2021, climbed 102 places to end the season as World no. 68. He will be one of the players to watch this season, particularly on hard courts, where he blossomed last year.

Fognini v Nakashima Prediction and Tip

It will be an intriguing battle between the experienced Fognini and the up-and-coming Nakashima. This contest may go the distance, with the American winning and improving his head-to-head record against the Italian.
