Lorenzo Sonego v Sebastian Baez Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the 26-year-old Italian and the Argentine, who is five years younger.

Sonego’s First Event of 2022

Like his opponent, Sonego is much better known for his exploits on clay, winning his second ATP title on that surface on home soil in Sardinia last April, also clinching the doubles title there as well.

However, he proved that he is beginning to adapt his game by finishing runner-up on the grass at Eastbourne two months later, and he does have a win against Novak Djokovic on a hard court from 2020 on his CV.

This is his first tournament of the year, and he faced a tough battle in his opening round match with Hugo Gaston of France, the world number 67.

It was Gaston who started the stronger, taking the opening set courtesy of one break of serve.

However, he was broken early in the second set and, although he recovered it, he immediately surrendered it one more as Sonego levelled the match.

Gaston saved six break points in the course of the third set, but the Italian made the seventh count, serving out from there.

Baez in Unfamiliar Territory

Although primarily known as a clay court player, Baez’s performances on hard courts on the Challenger tour last year were good enough to earn him a place in the season ending NextGen ATP finals where he won two matches and reached the semi-final stage.

Last week in Melbourne he reached the first round as a lucky loser, but has gone one better in Sydney, coming through qualifying to register his first ever win in the main draw of an outdoor hard court event on the senior tour.

He did so by beating another qualifier, Daniel O’Connell of Australia, currently ranked 173rd in the world.

Baez started strongly, and took the first set for the loss of just two games. However, O’Connell hit back strongly, and he took the second set, dropping just one game in the process.

The third set was tense, and, in the ninth game, Baez had to save two break points, the only ones either man faced in the set. In the end it came down to a tie-break, and, although the Argentine dropped his opening serve, three breaks gave him the match.

Sonego v Baez Prediction and Tip

Baez will be no pushover, but Sonego’s greater experience should make the difference in the end.
