Garbine Muguruza v Ekaterina Alexandrova Head to Head
There have been two previous meetings between these players with both winning one apiece. Muguruza won their first round match at the 2017 Wimbledon while Alexandrova made it 1-1 in 2020 when she creamed her opposition in straight sets in Shenzhen to make it to the final.

After enduring bit of a form rut in the lead-up to the start of pandemic, Muguruza has shown great resolve to bounce back to her winning ways.
So much so she enters this season on the back of three WTA titles last season including the WTA Finals and two other appearances in finals of competitions. A win-loss of 42-17 was one of the best in the business as well and that has helped her propel through to the number three on the WTA ranking charts.
What would be specifically heart-warming is the manner in which she ended the season; a defeat in the first round-robin match the season-ending competition to Karolina Pliskova was followed by four successive wins including a straight-set hammering of Anett Kontaveit which helped her clinch the title.
Muguruza didn’t play last week, which makes it interesting to see how she goes about her business in the lead-up to Australian Open.

Alexandrova Needs a Better Showing
After getting bundled out of the Adelaide International in the very first round, Alexandrova needed to keep her wits about her in her opener here in Sydney.
Taking on Japan’s Ena Shibahara, a player who has never been better ranked than 416th in the world, Alexandrova was stretched a tad before winning 6-4, 6-4 to move into the second round.
The match lasted an hour and 31 minutes and saw Alexandrova getting broken once but she retaliated with three breaks of her own to clinch the encounter.
Up against the world number three, the Russian however will need to do a lot better than the six double-faults and 56% first serves she managed in her opener. Can she use Muguruza’s rustiness to her advantage?
Muguruza v Alexandrova Prediction and Tip
While Muguruza starts off a favourite it would be interesting to see if she can overcome the lack of practice and get into the groove quickly enough. Expect Muguruza to win but not without bit of a stumble.
