Elise Mertens v Daria Kasatkina Head to Head
There have been three previous matches played between these players and Kasatkina has won every single time. These include twice on the WTA tour, including one last year in Standford where the Russian was a 6-3, 6-2 winner.

Mertens Eases Past Ferro
In a match lasting nearly two hours, Mertens was a straight-set winner over Fiona Ferro in her opener in what was her first tournament of the season.
An easy first set was followed by a fighting showing from Ferro but the Belgian dug deep to come through 6-2, 7-6 (5) and carve out a place in the second round.
Having finished off the previous season with just two wins from her last six matches, Mertens would be glad with the kind of start she has made here, even though she was a 1/3 favourite to come through.
What might have been slightly off-putting, however, was the fact she was broken five times in the match and while she did the same damage on seven different occasions on Ferro, Mertens would love to do a lot better against the in-form Kasatkina.

Kasatkina in Rasping Form
While she was bundled out at the semifinal stage in Melbourne last week by a raging Amanda Anisimova, she came back strongly in the first round here.
Pitted against the former Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin in her opener, Kasatkina ran away to a 6-4, 6-0 win in an hour and four minutes to seal her spot in the second round.
With 73% of her first serve points won, Kasatkina saved all the seven break-points she faced while breaking her opponent four times in five chances. It’s that kind of accuracy that has helped her throughout the five matches she has played this season.
And while Mertens could prove to be a stronger opposition than Kenin, Kasatkina’s solid form should give her enough confidence heading into this second round encounter.
