Alison Riske extended her dominance over Magda Linette as she won her fifth straight meeting in their series. The American has now dropped just two sets in those matches since their rivalry started in 2016.
And it appeared this match-up would be a total disaster for the Pole who accounted for four double faults. Linette made a shocking start to the match, going down a double break. She managed to retrieve one of them back, but the American earned another opportunity for an insurance service break in game five. Ultimately, she wrapped up the set in 49 minutes.
Things were tighter in the second set as Linette shrugged off her unforced error count to a minimum. However, she spurned a crucial break point at 3-2. When Riske eked out a hold, the pressure was transferred almost by osmosis to the World No. 55 who would be broken just two more games later.

Kalinina Stuns Cirstea
Anhelina Kalinina was too strong for the World No. 38 Sorana Cirstea as she polished off a 6-3 6-2 win in an hour and 26 minutes to reach the second round.
Kalinina had a rough time this past week as she was pitted to face Clara Tauson in the first round of the Melbourne Summer Set 2. Although she competed bravely, the powerful young Dane would emerge victorious in that contest.
The draw was not kind either this week at the Adelaide International. But the Ukrainian did not allow for ranking to dictate matters. Cirstea’s second serve was extremely ineffective, as she won eight points from 25. Kalinina made her move at the most opportune moments, breaking serve six times from 13 chances.
Kalinina will have the chance to win back-to-back matches for the first time since reaching the quarterfinals in Cluj-Napoca towards the end of last season. A deep run this week could push her to a career-high ranking inside the Top 50 for the first time.
