Aslan Karatsev v Lorenzo Sonego Head to Head

Their only previous encounter came in Dubai last year and Karatsev had overcome the first set loss to clinch the encounter in three.

Karatsev Eases Past Kecmanovic

After winning a couple of ATP titles in what was a coming-of-age season for Karatsev, he made a steady start to 2022 earlier this week with a straight-set second round win.

Having received a first round bye, Karatsev registered a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Kecmanovic in round two to march into the last eight stage of this competition.

In a match lasting an hour and 37 minutes, Karatsev overcame a break of serve in the first set, rallying from 2-5 down to win five games in a row. He followed that up with an easier second set in which he got himself a decisive break in the seventh game to carve out the win.

The win would have given Karatsev the confidence he continues to belong at the top level after having ended the previous year with back to back opening defeats.

Can he now make it to an early season semi?

Sonego Wins Back to Back Rounds

While Sonego is known for his clay court exploits, his performances in the first two rounds here would have filled him with the kind of confidence he would need heading into the rest of the Australian swing.

Starting off as a favourite against Hugo Gaston, Sonego overcame the loss of the first set in an exhibition of bit of a slow start to capture the next two to move into the second.

And he then defeated Sebastian Baez in what turned out to be a breeze, clinching a 6-2, 6-3 victory to rally into the last eight stage.

The match lasted an hour and 21 minutes and saw Sonego face not a single break-point even as he broke his opponent thrice of the nine chances he had.

Karatsev will prove to be a trickier opponent but given what Sonego has achieved so far, things might get interesting.
