Dream Start to 2022 for Kokkinakis

For Kokkinakis, who reached his only senior ATP final back in 2017 in Los Cabos, but is more usually found on the Challenger tour, it has been a dream start to 2022.

Last week in Adelaide, where he was again given a wildcard, he got all the way to the semi-finals, claiming the notable scalps of John Millman and Frances Tiafoe along the way, before losing to the eventual winner, Gael Monfils.

And this week he is at it again, beginning in the first round where he overwhelmed Benoît Paire of France in straight sets, the world number 47, whitewashing him in the second set.

Then ion Wednesday he achieved one of the biggest wins of his career, beating the American second seed and world number 24 John Isner.

The first set was dominated largely by serve, although Isner did have to save five break points, before prevailing in the subsequent tie-break.

The second set went along similar lines, except this time there were no break points created and it was Kokkinakis who won the tie-break.

That set up the third serve where again serve dominated and another tie-break was needed to decide the match.

Isner dropped his opening serve and that, ultimately proved to be the difference.

Vukic Avenges Johnson Defeat

Vukic had ended 2021 at a career high ranking after reaching two Challenger finals in November in the USA, but his year in Adelaide began less well last week, beaten in three sets by the experienced American Steve Johnson.

However, given another wildcard this week, he produced a first-round upset by beating Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan, the world number 35, taking the first set on a tie break, and then the second for the loss of just two games.

That earned him a second round rematch with Johnson, and this time he turned the tables on the world number 84.

He began the match well, breaking the American in his opening service game and consolidating that to take the first set.

The second set went with serve until the eleventh game, when Johnson offered up a break point, which Vukic gratefully accepted, He served out next game.

Kokkinakis v Vukic Prediction and Tip

Whatever happens, Australia are guaranteed to have a local wildcard in the semi-finals in Adelaide for a second successive week. However, given the form that Kokkinakis has shown so far in 2022, he is backed to continue that streak.
