Marin Cilic v Thanasi Kokkinakis Head to Head

Cilic, the former US Open champion, has never featured in a head-to-head meeting with Kokkinakis till date.

While the former World No.3 has been winding the clock back with his imperious displays in Adelaide so far, Kokkinakis just notched up his third straight win to reach the semifinals. Both will be expected to carry forward their current form and produce another knife-edged contest on Friday.

Rediscovering the form that saw him capture some of the biggest titles in the game, including his only Grand Slam win at the US Open in 2014 and an Olympic silver in Tokyo in 2020, Cilic opened his new season with a win over Brazilian Thiago Monteiro in the first round at Adelaide 1.

After winning the opening set by a comfortable margin, the Croat faced stiff resistance from the Brazilian in the second that went to a tiebreak.  However, bringing all his experience into play, Cilic pipped Monteiro in the second set tiebreak to progress to the next round.

Up against Serbian Laslo Djere in his next, the Croat produced vintage tennis to coast to a 6-3, 6-2 win which saw him book a quarter-final meeting with Russian Karen Khachanov. However, his campaign ended in last four after he crashed to a straight-set loss to the Russian.

Taking the positives from his last-four finish to Adelaide 2, Cilic posted a fighting, straight-set win over Spain’s Jaume Munar in his tournament opener to set up a quarter-final clash with rising American Tommy Paul.

Living up to most pre-match estimates, Cilic recovered from a slump in the second set to prevail in three sets. However, between the former World No.3 and a place in the final stands in-form Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis.

While the two haven’t faced each other before in court, the Australian continued his irrepressible form to march into the last four on Thursday. Cilic would have to bring his best tennis to the park to avoid an upset at the hands of Kokkinakis.

Kokkinakis Also Has Eyes On The Prize

Coming into the tournament on the back of a semifinal finish at Adelaide 1, Kokkinakis, carrying forward his blazing run of form, opened his campaign with a thumping takedown of experienced Frenchman Benoit Paire.

Going into the cash high on belief and confidence, the tall Australian breezed to a comfortable win in the opening set and handed the Frenchman a bagel in the next to progress to the next round.

In arguably the match of the tournament in his next against big-serving American John Isner, Kokkinakis went down a set after finishing on the wrong end of a closely fought tiebreak.

Hitting back, the Australian took the second set to a tiebreaker and won it by an identical margin by which he lost the one in the first set to take the match to a decider .

With both Isner and Kokkinakis at six games apiece at the end of the regulation 12 games, the final set also headed to a tiebreak.  The Aussie, however, held his nerve in tense moments to prevail in three sets.

Over to the semifinal next, Kokkinakis will face his biggest rival in the event so  far in the form of former Grand Slam champion Marin Cilic. The big Croat knows a thing or two about winning titles and the Australian would need every bit of home support  if he has to book a place in the final.

Cilic v Kokkinakis Prediction and Tip

While Cilic is comfortably ahead of Kokkinakis in terms of ranking and experience, both players have been in red-hot form in the tournament so far. However, home support combined with his own personal form will give the Aussie a slight edge going into the tie.
