Aslan Karatsev v Daniel Evans Head to Head

Karatsev beat Evans in their only meeting in Dubai last year. The Russian won the second round contest in three sets before going all the way to winning his maiden ATP title.

Karatsev Battles Past Sonego

In 2021, it was in Australia where Aslan Karatsev made a name for himself by reaching the semifinals of the Australian Open on his Grand Slam debut. One year on, the Russian is once again excelling down under.

The World No. 20 marched into the semifinals of Sydney International on Thursday with a hard-fought win over Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego.

The Russian, who was named “the most improved player of 2021,” didn’t end the season well losing his last three matches last year, but he ended the skid in Sydney, by beating Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanović in straight sets in the Round of 16 on Wednesday.

Seeded No. 1 for the tournament, Karatsev, who had a first round bye, continued his winning run in the quarterfinals against the fifth seed Italian on Thursday, but he was made to work hard for the win.

While the Russian dominated the first set with two break of serves, he was edged out in one-hour-and-14-minute second set by the gritty Italian.

Karatsev recovered in the third with two more breaks of serve to clinch the two-hour-and-and-49-minute contest 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.

The 28-year-old who ended 2021 with two titles and a 34-20 record will be hoping to reach a fourth career final on Friday. Besides winning in Dubai and Moscow, he also finished as runner-up in Belgrade last year.

Evans Extends His Unbeaten Run in 2022

Daniel Evans held off Melbourne finalist Maxime Cressy in the quarterfinals on Thursday to extend his perfect 2022 record to 5-0.

The World No. 26 had won all three of his singles matches at the season-opening ATP Cup, defeating Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff, Canada’s Denis Shapovalov and the United States’ John Isner, all in straight sets.

Carrying that form to Sydney, Evans hustled past Spain’s Pedro Martinez 6-2, 6-3 in the Round of 16 on Wednesday and then saw off the dangerous Cressy 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) on Thursday.

Evans, who withstood 11 aces from the American, won 84% first-serve points and a total of 75% service points in an hour-and-56-minute contest. The 31-year-old was down 0-2 in the first set, before bouncing back with two breaks to take the first set.

Evans saved a set point on his serve in the second set, which needed a tiebreak after neither player could earn a break. Eventually, the briton won a closely contested tiebreak to seize the match and remain unbeaten in the season.

Evans too will be aiming to reach a fourth career final. Having finished runner-up in Sydney in 2017 and in Delray Beach in 2019, he captured his maiden title in Melbourne-2 last season.

Karatsev v Evans Prediction and Tip

They went the distance in their last meeting and three sets seem imminent in this contest as well. However, Karatsev being the top seed will be the favourite to edge past the Briton again.
