Cristian Garin v Facundo Bagnis Head to Head

They have met just once on the tour, with Garin defeating Bagnis to claim the Chile Open title last year.

The two have also met thrice at lower level tournaments with the Argentine winning in 2015 and 2016 and Garin winning in 2018.

This will be their first meeting outside clay.

Garin Could Reach as Far as The Third Round

Yet to establish himself on surfaces other than clay, World No. 18 Cristian Garin will be looking to draw inspiration from his last year’s Grand Slam performances.

The 25-year-old made his fourth round debut at a major at the French Open and then made a maiden appearance in the Round of 16 at Wimbledon. What’s to be noted though is the fact that those wins in the first three rounds at the All England Club came against players ranked below 100 and the moment he faced a seeded player in Novak Djokovic he was blown away in no time.

So the Chilean does struggle outside his preferred surface, more so on hard courts where he has a 19-36 career record. This will be his third Australian Open appearance. He was knocked out in the first round in 2019 and in the second round in 2020.

How far can Garin go this year? If he does get through his first round against Bagnis, also a clay court specialist, the Chilean will meet Federico Delbonis or Pedro Martinez in the second round. Again both those players are more comfortable playing on clay and have little experience on hard courts.

So it’s a good opportunity for Garin to reach the third round in Melbourne for the first time. Going further would be a difficult ask as he may run into someone like a Gael Monfils or an Alexander Bublik in the Round of 32, both better equipped to play on hard surfaces.

A five-time tour level champion, Garin began his 2022 campaign at the ATP Cup. As expected, he suffered straight set losses to Roberto Bautista Agut and Casper Ruud, but did get a win against Serbia after Dusan Lajovic pulled out, while trailing 0-3 in the third set.

Murray Win To Inspire Bagnis

Garin’s opponent in the first round doesn’t have much experience playing on hard courts either, but Bagnis will be buoyed by the fact that he reached the third round of the U.S. Open last year  and got his only win of 2022 against Andy Murray in Melbourne.

That win over the former No. 1 would have certainly done his confidence a world of good and it could be seen in the next match as well, when he took the first set against the third seed Grigor Dimitrov before going down fighting.

Bagnis’ Sydney campaign ended quickly after he was brushed aside by David Goffin.

Can he impress at the Australian Open? Like Garin his struggles on surfaces outside clay are pretty evident, so it would be an interesting contest, particularly with Bagnis looking to avenge his Santiago final defeat. It was the 31-year-old left-hander’s maiden ATP final and he gave it his best shot but came out second best in a dramatic three-setter.

Currently ranked No. 71 in the world, Bagnis also reached the semifinals in Cordoba last year but didn’t don much in the other tournament finishing with an 11-12 record. This will be the Argentine’s second main draw appearance at the Australian Open, having exited the first round on his debut in 2017.

Garin v Bagnis Prediction and Tip

Garin is the higher-ranked player and is more experienced at the top level. Expect him to advance to the next round but given Bagnis’ form he may take a set of the Chilean.

Tip: Garin to win AND Both players to win a set: 13/8 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
