Nadal In Search Of #21
Sixth seed and 2009 Australian Open champion Rafael Nadal begins his Aussie Open campaign seeded lower than he is typically used to at majors.
After winning his 20th major when he won the French Open in 2020 for the 13th time, he has been in search of the elusive title #21 as he is currently tied at 20 slams with Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.
2021 was a difficult season for the Spaniard, with Nadal carrying a foot injury through most of the clay season, resulting in a semi-final loss at Roland Garros to Novak Djokovic . When he returned for the hard court season in Washington DC in August, he was visibly in pain on the same foot as he lost early to Lloyd Harris of South Africa.
Weighing all options, Nadal decided to end his season right thereafter.
Nadal returned to the tour last week at the ATP 250 in Melbourne and although he played some of the lesser known players of the likes of Ricardo Berankis, Emil Ruusuvuori and Maxime Cressy, it was useful match practice and did wonders to his self-confidence as he won his 89th career ATP title in Melbourne last week.
The Aussie Open has not been very kind to Nadal over the years, and with a draw as strong as he has this time, he will be hoping to pull of a good run this season one way or another.

Giron Hoping To Bring A Challenge In Opener
American Marcos Giron had a good second half of the 2021 season breaking into the top 60 in the world for the first time in his career.
His run included quarter-finals at Winston Salem, Moselle and semi-finals at Sofia, alongside other good wins during the course of the year. Giron also made the third round of the French Open, his best major run till date.
Giron was successful in recording victories against the likes of Alex de Minaur, Diego Schwartzman and Frances Tiafoe during the hard and indoor court season in late 2021.
The ’22 season did not get off to the best of starts for the American with first round losses at both the Melbourne and Sydney ATP 250s.
Giron has never been past the first round at the Aussie Open and will hope to bring a challenge as he faces the uphill task of playing Nadal in his opener.
Nadal v Giron Prediction and Tip
The American, Giron, has shown in late 2021 that he is capable to decent results on the hard and indoor courts. However, he is beginning his campaign against one of the all-time greats of the sport who should have one too many tricks for Giron.
Expect a straight set win for Nadal.
