Alcaraz Trounces Tabilo

Eighteen-year-old Carlos Alcaraz hustled past Chilean qualifier Alejandro Tabilo in the first round on Monday to advance to the second round in Melbourne for the second consecutive year.

The 2021 NextGen ATP Finals champion needed an hour and 54 minutes to dispatch the 24-year-old left-hander 6-2, 6-2, 6-3.

Winning 79% of first serve points, Alcaraz served 12 aces and struck 40 winners, while making 25 unforced errors in the match. In what was a dominant performance, the Spaniard was broken just once in the match, while he broke Tabilo thrice in the first set and twice each in the next two sets.

This is Alcaraz’s first appearance in a tournament since his NextGen ATP Finals win over Sebastian Korda in the final in November.

The Spaniard is coming off an impressive 32-17 season. He captured his maiden ATP title in Umag, reached the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open and featured in three other tour-level semifinals last year.

The World No. 31 will be hoping to build on the start he got on Monday, but faces a tough opponent in the next round.

Lajovic Begins With Five-Set Win

World No. 39 Dusan Lajovic of Serbia pipped No. 38 Marton Fucsovics of Hungary in a five-set contest to advance to the second round of the Australian Open.

The 31-year-old, who produced his best result at the Melbourne major in 2021 by reaching the last 16, had 14 breaking opportunities in the match and he capitalised on seven of them, while saving two of four break points on his serve.

The 31-year-old served nine aces, one less than Fucsovics and struck 37 winners against the Hungarian’s 44. But the Serb made just 47 unforced errors against his opponent’s 71 to win the three-hour-and-23-minute contest 6-3, 4-6, 6-1, 6-7 (6-8), 6-1.

Lajovic had a terrible start to the yer as he lost all three of his matches at the ATP Cup. He got his first win in the first round in Sydney, defeating Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in straight sets but fell to Maxime Cressy in the second round. This follows an ordinary 18-28 season where he struggled to get going.

Alcaraz v Lajovic Prediction and Tip

This should be a good contest with Lajovic giving the seeded Alcaraz a tough fight, but eventually the Spaniard should advance to the third round.
