Albot Dispatches Nishioka

A year after making a stunning run to the third round of the Australian Open, Radu Albot is back enjoying himself down under.

The Moldovan, who came through the qualifiers, put on a good show as he knocked out Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka 6-3, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 in a two-hour-and-34-minute first-round contest on Monday.

Broken in the very first game of the match, Albot came back with two breaks of serve to win the first set. Both exchanged breaks early in the second set as well, but yet again it was Albot who got his nose in front with a second break and held on to it to take a two-set-to-love lead. While the Japanese looked frustrated at the end of the second set, he found something to cheer in the third, breaking the Moldovan in the last game to keep his chances alive.

But Albot quickly overcame the third set setback and took control of the fourth to seal the contest with two breaks of serve in the final set.

The Moldovan, who hit 43 winners in the match, won 83% (29 of 35) net points.

Albot failed to qualify for Adelaide-2, but won all three of his qualifiers for the Australian Open, defeating Italy’s Filippo Baldi, Japan’s Yosuke Watanuki and Portugal’s Joao Sousa respectively.

Vukic Stuns Harris

In a major upset on Day 1, Australian wild card Aleksander Vukic stunned the 30th seed Lloyd Harris in the first round on Monday.

Egged on by the home fans, Vukic fought back from a set down to beat the South African 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, 7-6 (7-3) and claim his first ever win at a Grand Slam.

Ranked No. 144, the Australian won 83% (68 of 82) points on his first delivery and struck 32 winners and 45 unforced errors to Harris’s 39 winners and 58 unforced errors. Winning crucial moments in the contest, the Aussie converted two of nine break points and saved four of five.

The win over the World No. 33 was Vukic’s second over a top 40 player this year. He had beaten the 35th ranked Alexander Bublik in the first round of Adelaide-2, en route his first ever ATP quarterfinal.

Can he keep his dream run going?
