After going two tournaments without a win in 2022, Elina Svitolina is finally off to the races. Playing Fiona Ferro in the Melbourne Slam opener, she won in straight sets with 6-1, 7-6(4) in a little over 90 minutes.
The Ukrainian was focused for most of the match, barring for a few moments in the second set where she ended up committing a bit too many unforced errors. Nonetheless, a win is a win and against Tan, she has a good opportunity to further refine her game.
So far this season, Svitolina has succumbed to Madison Keys and the 136th-ranked Anastasia Gasanova. The 27-year-old isn’t as sharp as she was a couple of seasons ago. Last year, she took a sharp hit in her rankings – crashing down to 15th place from being the World No. 4.
She also won just one singles title – WTA 250 Chicago, in addition to an Olympic Bronze.

Tan Delivers her Best Run in the Slam
24-year-old Harmony Tan defeated Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan 6-3, 6-3, in 80 minutes. She struck a remarkable 25 winners and won four matches in a row.
With that, the Frenchwoman has also posted her best showing in the Aus Open, having failed to move past the qualifiers in the last edition.
But her prospects of making it further are definitely slim. Tan has played in only one event this season – Adelaide International 2 – and lost in the qualifiers to Anastasia Potapova.
As for her form in the previous season, the current World No. 107 spent most of her time on the ITF Tour where she reached three finals. Tan only featured in a handful of WTA events – and reached the semifinal in Bogota and second round in the French Open. As dull as they may seem, these results helped Tan move some 85 places in the singles ranking.

Svitolina should win this one too but don’t be surprised if it turns into a slogfest. This is a good opportunity for both players to truly test themselves – especially for Tan as her opponent is a bit rusty.
