Denis Shapovalov v Soonwoo Kwon Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before, in the US Open in 2020, Shapovalov winning in four sets.

Shapovalov Made to Work by Serb

Shapovalov, looking to build on the form that helped Canada win the ATP Cup, faced Laslo Djere of Serbia, the world number 51, in the first round on Monday.

The Canadian began the match badly, dropping the opening service game of the match, but with the Serb serving for the set, he was able to break back to level, and then clinched the resulting tie-break.

He then took the second set courtesy of a single break, and, at that point, all appeared to be plain sailing for Shapovalov.

However, Djere had other ideas. He broke Shapovalov early in the third set and held on to it to give himself a foothold back into the match.

The fourth set saw fortunes fluctuate with Djere going a break down only to level once more. Shapovalov had a match point, saw that saved and then went a break down.

Then the Serb served for the chance to take the match into a fifth set, only to drop his serve at the vital moment. And he paid for that dearly as Shapovalov won the tie-break and the match.

Kwon Digs Deep to Beat Teenager

Reaching the second round In Melbourne is a new experience for Kwon. In his three previous appearances in the main draw, he had lost his opening round match on each occasion.

He had to dig really deep though to improve on that record in his match against the Danish teenager Holger Vitus Nodskov Rune.

Kwon began on the back foot, dropping his opening service game and then another break allowed Rune to close out the first set.

The South Korean worked his way back into the match, broke Rune early in the second set and when he then dropped his own serve, was to immediately able to restore his advantage with another break.

However, after another sequence of three consecutive dropped service games in the third set, it was the Dane who once more held the advantage, and, when he was broken in the opening game of the fourth set, Kwon was in trouble.

However, he used his greater experience, got the break back and then broke once more to take the match to a fifth set.

And this time he proved the stronger player over the home straight, two breaks enabling him to clinch the victory with his fourth match point.

Shapovalov v Kwon Prediction and Tip

Both men had to work hard to win their opening round matches, but Shapovalov is the seed and has won their only previous match.
