Lorenzo Sonego v Oscar Otte Head to Head

The pair have played each other twice before on the senior tour, and the current head to head record is one win apiece. Sonego won their match in Metz in 2019, but Otte beat him in the first round of his run at the US Open last year.

In addition, they also met twice on the Challenger circuit, Sonego winning on both occasions.

Sonego Makes Second Round Again

Sonego is into the second round in Melbourne for the second successive year and the third time in his career.

Primarily known as a clay court specialist, especially earlier in his career, it is a mark of how he is developing into an all court player that his first round match with the big serving American Sam Querrey, the world number 110, did not hold more terrors for him.

As expected, serve was dominant from the start, although both men had to save break points, until the American dropped his serve in the eleventh game and Sonego was able to serve out.

Sonego had to save three break points early in the second set, but, having done so, he was able to break Querrey to assume control of the match.

Break points came and went on either side of the net early in the third set, but it was Querrey who was to rue missed opportunities. The Italian broke him once more, and there was no way back for the American from there.

Otte Reaches New Milestone

Otte grabbed the headlines at the US Open in New York last September when he became one of a trio of qualifiers to reach the fourth round. That was the third time he had qualified for a Grand Slam in 2021, never having made the main draw of any major tournament before.

Spared from the rigours of qualifying this time, the 28-year old German found himself in the main draw in Melbourne for the first time.

Determined not to let the opportunity pass, he would have been pleased to learn that his opponent on Monday was another qualifier Chun Hsin Tsing of Taiwan, currently ranked 190th in the world.

The first set was scrappy with the pair exchanging an early sets of breaks, before Otte moved a break ahead. Tsing was briefly level but another break gave the German the set.

Again, the man from Taiwan was to recover from a break down in the second set only to be broken again as Otte also took that as well.

And, with his serve under constant pressure by now, Tsing was broken twice more in the third with the German in complete control by then.

Sonego v Otte Prediction and Tip

Whoever wins will be in the third round in Melbourne for the first time. Otte enjoys playing in Grand Slams but Sonego will not be fazed and should have too good an all-round game for the German.
