It took time for Argentine qualifier to find some rhythm Tomas Etcheverry and while Carreno Busta was pushed in the third set, the Spaniard’s experience was more than enough to help him seal a straight-set win.
Carreno Busta won 6-1, 6-2, 7-6 (2) to make it to the second round, needing two hours and eight minutes to make it through.
Interestingly, there wasn’t a lot to distinguish between the two players except Carreno-Busta’s ability to come up with winners at the most opportune and crucial times. He helped himself to eight break-points and five of them resulted in breaks of serves.
And while he was broken once just as Carreno Busta was about to serve for a 4-2 lead, he completed an easy win in the tie-breaker that followed.
The former world number 10 had earlier won four of his five singles matches in the ATP Cup.

Griekspoor Doubles Grand Slam Tally
Having won just one match in the main draw of major competitions, Griekspoor doubled that count with an opening round win here.
The Dutchman, who had earlier made it to the quarterfinal of the Melbourne Summer Set 1, shocked Fabio Fognini in round one. He won 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 in a mere hour and 49 minutes after having gone into the encounter at 6/5 odds to upset his higher-ranked opponent.
Griekspoor broke his opponent four times in the match including twice in the first set and faced just two break-points in return, saving both. 11 aces and 28 winners punctuated the win and with 12 fewer unforced errors to go with it, there was no surprise in the result.
His form, which has seen him acquire a 3-0 win-loss record so far this season – Griekspoor withdrew from his quarterfinal at the Summer Set 1 competition – should keep him in the contest here.
