Tamara Zidansek v Heather Watson Head to Head

The pair have met once before in Adelaide, just a week ago, Zidansek edging a very close match in a third set tie-break.

Zidansek Survives Epic Battle

Last year’s French Open semi-finalist Zidansek is into the second round in Melbourne, but she was made to work very hard for her passage by Arantxa Rus of the Netherlands,  the world number 65, who put up an almighty fight in their first round match on Tuesday.

It was the Dutch woman who drew first blood with an early break and, although she then dropped her own serve immediately, was able to break once more and went on to claim the set.

When Zidansek was broken in the opening game of the second set, the Slovenian seemed to be in trouble, especially when she faced two break points in her next service game.

However, she was able to hit back with a break of her own, and after saving more break points, she broke once more and was able to level the match.

And the tide seemed to have turned in her favour when she broke Rus in the opening game of the deciding set.

However, serving for the match, not only did she see three match points saved, but Rus then broke her serve to level the contest once more.

A tie-break followed but no woman could get a definitive advantage, and the longer it went on, the closer Zidansek edged closer to going out of the tournament. However, finally at 9 – 8  she earned another match point, and this time, at the fourth time of asking, she made it count.

Watson Goes Past Sherif

Watson is now into the second round in Melbourne for the fifth time in her career, although only once has she been further than that, and that was nine years ago.

She began her match with Mayar Sherif of Egypt, the underdog, at least on paper, given that her opponent is currently ranked 32 places higher than her in the world.

Sherif, though, struggled from the start, was broken in the opening service game of the match, and, serving to stay in the set, dropped her serve once more.

The Egyptian, though, stayed in the match, regrouped, and broke Watson in turn midway through the second set. She had set points, could not take them and the Channel Islander broke her, only to then drop her own serve again.

And when Sherif earned herself another set point in the next game, she was able to convert it this time.

Another break at the start of the third set seemed to put Sherif in the driving seat, only for her to immediately squander her advantage when she was broken next game.

And then, when she dropped her serve once more, the momentum had decisively shifted in favour of Watson. That was confirmed as Sherif, serving to stay in the match, dropped her serve again for what proved to be the final time.

Zidansek v Watson Prediction and Tip

Given that the pair played each other just a week ago, and that proved to be a close match, the same again can be expected this time. Zidansek just edged that contest and will start the favourite to do so again, but it could go either way.
